President's Welcome

As President, I am excited to welcome everyone to the Texas Southern University Greater Los Angeles Chapter website. This platform is designed to connect, engage, and inspire our alumni community. Whether you graduated last year or decades ago, your journey and achievements are an integral part of our legacy. We extend our help to all students, teachers, and those who seek to enhance their lives. We stand with the TSU motto “Excellence in Achievement”.

Welcome to Texas Southern University Greater Los Angeles Chapter – Where your journey begins!

TSU Early History

  • ● 1927 – Texas Southern University (TSU) a Historically Black College (HBCU) had its humble beginnings as Houston Colored Junior College, a privately funded school, under the supervision of Houston Public Schools. It was located in Third Ward on the campus of Jack Yate High School

    ● 1934 – Because of rapidly increased enrollment, the School Board changed it to a four-year college and named it Houston College for Negroes.

    ● 1947 – Influenced by a lawsuit by Herman Sweatt who was denied admission to the University of Texas Law School, a “separate but equal” law school was added by the state, thus the name was changed to Texas University for Negroes, the first state school of its kind in Houston.

    ● 1951 – After students petitioned the legislature to remove ‘for Negros’ from the name, it became Texas Southern University.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide a meaningful connection between our alumni and the students of Los Angeles. It is our hope that through  sharing our academic and professional experiences we can network, create friendships, and most importantly, create a pathway for LA students to transition from high school to our alma mater, and eventually into our alumni ranks. By providing information about the university, mentoring, and providing scholarships, we want to make it easier for students to take advantage of the opportunities available at TSU.  In addition, it is our mission to expose students to the history and traditions of how a Texas Southern University education can change their future.
